Rock with You: MJ + Latin-twist = Holiday Fun!

I got the chance to see Rock with You a couple nights ago, and I’m really glad I did. The first thing that I must point out – for those who will be going to the show – is that they have Cuban food and drinks in the front of the theatre. So, going early is a great idea! But, I digress…

Peter Pan: More than just digital flying

Last night, I went to see the new "high-tech", threesixty experience of Peter Pan at the Orange County Performing Arts Center with high expectations of amazing digital feats and wonders of how live theater will change in our ever-evolving computerized world. While the show did not dissappoint with the amazing 360-degree video projections of London and Neverland, what I (and my family) remember most are the talents of the actors and actresses, puppeteers and dancers (both on stage and in the air!).

Where Do You Go?: Soup for the Los Angeles Soul

I know most of the time Los Angeles weather claims us this identity of perpetual sunshine and warmth. And as a native Angeleno, I don't necessarily deny that this isn't true most of the time. But as I look out to the mist of Los Angeles morning winter drizzle while sitting in an office that could do with a thermostat adjustment, I can't help but think about having a nice bowl of soup.  My list of favorite soup and soup-based food is as eclectic as the Los Angeles cultural landscape:

Downtown LA Holiday Event Picks (Editor Edition)

The weather outside is frightful...

..and it actually kind of is!  Though today is particularly lovely, lately there's been a chill in the air calling me toward warm holiday drinks and bowls of soup.  Los Angeles perhaps isn't known for its Winter Wonderland experience (soap bubble snow at the Grove doesn't count, does it?), but with the cold wind billowing outside I am reminded that the winter season is upon us and with it Holiday Events!  To make sure the list doesn't get too extensive, here are my holiday picks for Downtown LA:

Hammer Museum: Jonathan Gold and Bret Easton Ellis

Last week I attended a Hammer Museum conversation between Jonathan Gold and Bret Easton Ellis.  Of course, my first reaction when hearing about this event was "how do these two fit?"  After all, one is a writer known for his culinary tastes and shedding light on the eclectic options for the Los Angeles palate.  The other, also a writer, is known for the dark comedy of his novels, the twisted ethos of his characters, and Los Angeles as a setting for a number of his works.  Perhaps in the vein of Los Angeles' arts and cultural pairings, these two writers made no sense whatsoever while making perfect sense at the same time...which is exactly why I had such a great time.

Chinatown LA Turkey Dinners

ChinatownLA Turkey Carving
I never realized that getting an already prepared turkey to go from Chinatown Los Angeles was a Thanksgiving tradition for many people in the Los Angeles area. I used to joke with George Yu, the Executive Director of the Chinatown business improvement district, that one of the funniest parts of the holiday movie, A Christmas Story, was when the dog ate the turkey and the family went out to the local Chinese restaurant for the celebration meal. But in the movie, they are the only ones in the restaurant, but from what George says, going to ChinatownLA for turkey is quite a holiday event.

"Awesome" book release party

Last week, co-blogger Charity tipped me off about a children's book release party that took place Saturday evening at Family Books in the West Hollywood area. The party was to celebrate a new book by author Dallas Clayton called, "An Awesome Book of Thanks."

As a first-time expecting mother, I thought it sounded like fun and probably good practice (I anticipate attending many of these sort of events and activities when our little one arrives). I grabbed a gal-pal (who was less than enthusiastic about spending her Saturday evening with a bunch of kids at a book reading), and treated her to some dinner at Canter's before making our way over.

Rooted in history: Los Angeles Heritage Portal

"Progress" and "change" are often associated with Los Angeles. Many pop-culture trends are set here, from fashion, to health and lifestyle philosophies, to entertainment and so on. Living in Los Angeles, we see change on a daily basis as new homes, buildings and commercial properties go up in all parts of the City and County. Not to mention the fast-paced world in which we now live in makes yesterday seem like a distant memory.

Roots of Change Network Summary

California Secretary of Agriculture A.G. Kawamura and Joshua GibbsLast week from Wednesday, October 6 to Friday, October 8 many people unsatisfied with our current food and agriculture system in California met in downtown Los Angeles for the Roots of Change Network Summit (ROCNS). You can see the agenda on the official roots of change website here: http://rootsofchange.org/content/roots-change-network-summit-2010.

It kicked off with a wonderful reception at Vibiana’s on Main St in Downtown LA. Top chefs and restaurants from around the LA area cooked up a wide variety of delicious small plates for guests attending the $100 ticket event. The chefs as well as many local farmers were there enjoying the reception and socializing with their numerous foodie fans. Alongside the tables of food were various organizations working towards a better food system such as
California Food Policy Advocates
,The Los Angeles Food Bank, and Food & Water Watch. Attendees had the opportunity to speak with these different food system reform advocates to learn what they can personally do to help out. The reception was an evening of delicious entertainment but the real purpose of ROCNS was unveiling the Roots of Change California Healthy Food and Agriculture Platform.

Bach is So L.A.: Los Angeles Bach Events in October

Perhaps it's because I'll be singing in the chorus of the finale concert of the Los Angeles Bach Festival this year, but I've noticed that there are a lot of Bach events happening in Los Angeles.  This leads me to conclude that "Bach is so LA".

The following highlights Bach events for the month of October.

Movie Review: LET ME IN is THE RIGHT ONE

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of seeing LET ME IN (opening October 1st, 2010), a remake of the Swedish vampire horror film, LET THE RIGHT ONE IN. For a fan of horror and different cultures, I thoroughly enjoyed the original, and found that this new film holds up very well to its predecessor, and even upped it a few notches on the "horror movie" scale. After watching the original, I was yearning for more freaky vampire action, and certainly got it with LET ME IN.

Mosley vs. Mora

The young rising star El Canelo (the cinnamon-colored one) Saul Alvarez knocked out his opponent Carlos Baldomir in the 6th round. The punch that sent Baldomir to the canvas brought forth a rain of beer from an overzealous fan unto to us in the media. Magic Johnson, Ron Artest of the Champion Lakers, Sugar Ray Leonard, funny man Eddie Murphy were among the others in attendance; Sergio Mora vs. Sugar Shane Mosley of course being the main attraction of the evening had the near capacity crowd as enthusiastic as those who had attended the Madison Square Garden first bout between Muhammad Ali vs Joe Frazier.

A matter of civic pride

Typically, our XLA blog recounts our staff members' L.A. experiences, or we'll inform you of upcoming, fun events and things to do in and around Los Angeles. Occasionally, we'll provide information relevant to L.A. that's not necessarily about an event, but might include some useful tips for our fellow Angelenos.

And while we are huge supporters of taking public transit as much as possible, we understand that a car is still necessary in some circumstances in L.A. Which brings me to my latest L.A. experience: the broken parking meter. Recently I was meeting a friend at one of our favorite cafes in Studio City. I parked at a meter only to discover it was flashing the "Failed" warning at me.
