Come and Join Volunteer Day at L.A. Elementary!

Members Project from TakePart and American Express is teaming up with the HandsOn Network to engage volunteers to help improve the Los Angeles Elementary school. Volunteers will brighten the exterior cafeteria area and school breeze ways with much-needed fresh coats of paint and bright murals based on the "Small Steps to Big Change" theme.

Additionally, murals will be painted on the bungalow classrooms that surround the playground, and volunteers will spruce up small patches of garden areas set amidst the concrete play-yard by planting and pruning.

In late September, American Express recently donated $1 million to DonorsChoose.org, an organization that empowers people to help students in need by funding teacher submitted projects, such as helping provide art supplies and musical instruments. $350,000 of that donation will bring an estimated 870 classroom projects to life, impacting up to 22,600 students and teachers in the Los Angeles area.

About Los Angeles Elementary School: Los Angeles Elementary School is a single track elementary school that serves 804 students from a low-income, densely populated neighborhood of Los Angeles. The students come from families that have been deeply impacted by the economic recession – 99% of students are eligible for free meals under the National School Lunch Program which means that their families have incomes at or below 130% of the poverty level. Yet despite this, the students have shown real improvement in annual grade scores which has been attributed to a committed faculty, some of whom have taught at the school for over 10 years, and an engaged parent body.
