Happy World Puppetry Day

Our friends at the Pantages Theatre let us know that today is World Puppetry Day!  So, how best to celebrate then by looking at our events calendar for puppet-related events?  While there are events for kids, the humor and magic of puppetry comes to life in shows for all kinds of ages!

Kid-Friendly/All Ages
7th Annual Easter Festival
Location: Orange County Market Place - Costa Mesa
Date/Time: March 24th 2013 - 9:30AM-2:30PM (Swap Meet 7AM-4PM)
Cost: $2 or Free for ChildreN Under 12
Ages: All Ages
In addition to Easter events like treasure hunts, Easter baskets treats, and Easter bunny photos, this festival also offers face painting, mural coloring, and a marionette puppet show!  Uncle Gus Puppet Carnival occurs at 10:30AM, NOON, and 2PM and is presented by Pullin Strings Puppet Productions of Huntington Beach.

Location: The Skirball Cultural Center - Beverly Hills 
Date/Time: April 7th 2013 - 10AM-4:30PM
Cost: $10 General Admission; $7 Seniors and Children over 12; $5 Children 2-12; FREE to Skirball Members and Children Under 2
Ages: All Ages
In this second annual event, the Skirball hosts a festival of art making, close-up puppet happenings, and a host of puppet performances "sure to delight visitors ages 2 to 102".  The event brings together some of Southern California's most talented puppeteers and artists. 

Location: North Hollywood Senior Arts Colony - San Fernando Valley
Date/Time: April 20th 2013 - 2:00PM-3:30PM
Cost: FREE exhibit and shadow theater performance 
Ages: All Ages
A special performance in culmination of the 2013 Art & Craft of Shadow Theater, this event serves as one of the first kick-off events for the first annual Los Angeles Puppet Week celebrations.   

Location: Natural History Museum - Downtown Los Angeles 
Date/Time: Year Round (Schedule subject to Change - Check with Museum for Information)
Cost: Included with Museum Admission.
Ages: All Ages
At the Natural History Museum, NHM paleontologists and puppeteers bring dinosaurs to life with realistic T.rex and Triceratops large-scale puppets. 

For Mature Audiences 

Songs of Bilitis
Location: Bootleg Theater - Downtown Los Angeles
Date/Time: Thu-Sat through April 7th - 7:30PM-9:30PM
Ages: Mature Audiences Only 
The Rogue Artists Ensemble combines multimedia projects with puppetry, movement, live audio-sampling, and Greek Masks as they explore "how a flamboyant heterosexual avant-garde Parisian novelist successfully impersonated a lesbian Greek poet in the most elaborate erotic literary hoax the world has ever known".

Real Men Sing Show Tunes...and play with puppets
Location: Norris Center for the Performing Arts - South Bay
Date/Time: Select Dates and Times - April 26th 2013-May 12th 2013
Ages: Mature Audiences Only 
This musical features 29 original songs and "pays homage to all things male" including fatherhood, mid-life crisis, dating and marriage.  Puppetry is used to fill out the "zany characters".  Originally premiering in Florida in 2012, this is the West Coast premiere of the show.
